Bernadette Page 14
Bernadette is jealous of the kids getting their First Holy Communion.
When Jesus died on the cross he forgave the sins of everyone willing to repent of their sins and be baptized. He also forgave the sins of Mary at the instant of her conception, so they never touched her. This works because God is not bound by time.
Bernadette's all like, oh, right, I know what you're talking about Father.... but she didn't. XD
let me know in the comments if this is difficult to read!

p.s. anything to add, Meagan?
<3 Only to make a few things clear. . . The Immaculate Conception wasn't something the average churchgoer knew about yet. . . so the priest asking if her parents had spoken of it was more of a "just in case". . . rather than something that was at all likely.
So that we don't mislead people, I want to emphasize that Mary still has Christ as her savior, but as we see his work of redemption transcending time in a forward manner for us, we also see it transcending in a backwards manner for Mary. There is a LOT of theology around this - we're just giving you a few bare bones for the sake of the story.
And the lady, if she is Mary, is the spiritual mother of all the baptized. We are baptized into Christ's family, and she is his mother. So her appearing to Bernadette doesn't suddenly make her Bernadette's spiritual mother. That has always been so. What it changes in the priest's eyes is more the validity of Bernadette's visions. . . but he doesn't want to say that out loud, so he stumbles over his words trying to find an excuse for saying "this changes everything."
Also, I love how little Bernadette is.
