St. Teresa of Jesus
On The Grapevine 57
St. Teresa of Avila again! St. John of the Cross was a fairly short man. Once when he and a friend came to visit Teresa and her Discalced Carmelites, she called to her sisters, "Look who's come to visit us! It's a monk and a half!"
Teresa was practical and full of funny quotes. Together with St. John of the Cross, she reformed the Carmelite order, setting up many new Discalced Carmelite monasteries with strict regulations and reestablishing many of the abandoned practices of the Carmelite order. She faced a lot of persecution in doing so. She had a deep interior life of humility, prayer and intimacy with God, and experienced many ecstasies and visions. She is perhaps most well known for her work , "The Interior Castle," which follows the progress of the soul within its spiritual life towards intimacy with Christ. St. Teresa of Jesus is now known as a Doctor of the Church.

St. Teresa of Avila's Prayer to Redeem Lost Time
O my God! Source of all mercy!
I acknowledge Your sovereign power.
While recalling the wasted years that are past,
I believe that You, Lord,
can in an instant turn this loss to gain.
Miserable as I am,
yet I firmly believe that You can do all things.
Please restore to me the time lost,
giving me Your grace,
both now and in the future,
that I may appear before You in "wedding garments."
Amen
