St. Teresa of Avila
On the Grapevine 31
St. Teresa of Avila! Her feast day is coming up on Wednesday, October 15th, so I thought I'd feature her again. Carmelites are known for living a life of constant prayer. As legend has it, one day while she was using the privy, Satan popped up and began mocking her. Teresa, unruffled, responded "What comes out of my mouth is for God. What comes out of the other end is for you!"
Teresa was practical and full of funny quotes. Together with St. John of the Cross, (of whom she simply said - "He is a short, funny little man") she reformed the Carmelite order, setting up many new cloisters with strict regulations. She faced a lot of resistance in doing so. She had a deep interior life of humility, prayer and intimacy with God. She is perhaps most well known for her work , "The Interior Castle," which follows the progress of the soul within its spiritual life towards intimacy with Christ. St. Teresa of Avila is now known as a Doctor of the Church.

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.
