St. Stephen of Hungary (King)
On the Grapevine 23
St. Stephen was the well educated son of Christian parents at a time when Christianity was new to Hungary. He became the first King of Hungary in 1000 AD and set out to establish Hungary as a Christian nation. St. Stephen fought many battles during his life, and many of them were against relatives who wanted his throne. He was known to disguise himself as a Christian missionary and do missionary work. He also disguised himself and gave alms to beggars.
This was what he was doing when a group of rough beggars beat him, pulled his hair and beard, and stole his money. St. Stephen prayed,
"Queen of heaven, see how your people have treated me whom you made king. If they were your enemies, I would have punished them. But since they are your Son's people, I will suffer this joyfully and say thank you for it."
King Stephen then promised to give more than ever to beggars.
St. Stephen married a good woman named Gisela, but their son was killed in a hunting accident, and so after King Stephen's death
the throne passed to one of his power-hungry relatives. St. Stephen is the patron saint of Hungary, and his right hand remains
incorrupt. You can read more about him HERE.
