St. Augustine of Hippo
On The Grapevine 11
"Too late have I loved Thee, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new. Too late have I loved Thee. "
St. Augustine was one of the great intellectuals of his time, but he lived a life of loose living as a pagan, then heretic, subject to his passions. His mother was a devout Christian who prayed constantly for his conversion. As she pleaded with a bishop to speak to Augustine, the bishop told her - "Be not disheartened. It is impossible that the son of so many tears should perish." And his words proved true.
St. Augustine ached for truth, but didn't want to leave the things that had given him pleasure.. It was at this time that he prayed - "Lord, grant me chastity and continence - but not yet!" He began to read the scriptures, and was surprised to find that all of his studying and platonic philosophies of the past were revealed in even greater depth within the Christian dogmas. St.Augustine fell head over heels in love with Christ. His mother, St. Monica, died soon after his baptism, finally at peace. St. Augustine eventually became a bishop and founder of a religious order, and his autobiography, Confessions, has inspired people for generations.
