Guardian Angel II 05
In St. Augustine's Confessions, he cries out to God "You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you."
Psychologists call this restlessness "Sehnsucht," (German) and define it by 6 core characteristics: 1) Utopian conceptions of ideal development, 2) Sense of incompleteness and imperfection of life, 3) Conjoint time focus on the past, present, and future, 4) Ambivalent (bittersweet) emotions, 5) Reflection and evaluation of one's life, and 6) Symbolic richness. It's that restless longing for something more. My mother simply puts it, "We all have a God - sized hole in our hearts." And God is letting our girl feel it. She is restless . . . she wants to be consoled. So she turns to her friends for amusement.
Our Angel ("Messenger"), in perfect obedience to God, allows our girl to seek consolation elsewhere, knowing she will not find it. Angels in the Bible often appear after prayer, alms and fasting. But our girl has forgotten to turn to God.
- Meg
She is restless. . .her heart is not settled because it is seeking satisfaction in the world. It is all disordered, because it was never made for the world - the world was made for it, to bring it to God. However, being self-centered, she takes all things for granted, and uses them inasmuch as they seem to contribute to her earthly happiness. So you see her disregard for her homework - it is boring her, so she does not consider the cost and purpose of her education, but rather leaves it to find something that she thinks will entertain her and make her feel satisfied and happy right now.
