St. Philip Neri
On The Grapevine 10
St. Philip Neri is the priest with the hat in the top image. He wasn't one for severe penances. . . instead, he encouraged people to humble themselves in creative and often humorous ways. He was an impulsive, spontaneous, obedient and humble priest. He happily made himself look like a fool for Christ and poured himself out in service.
St. Philip Neri had an intense prayer life and would become so overwhelmed with the beauty of the mass that he often had to postpone the mass until he could pull himself together. He carried a book of jokes with him that he read in the sacristy to help himself regain composure. Carrying this book of jokes with him at all times was also his way of appearing childlike and foolish to the people who flocked to see him.
