St. Jerome
On The Grapevine 58
St. Jerome was a very well educated, scholarly man who took very quickly to the learning and translation of languages. He used to enjoy walking alongside the tombs of martyrs and deciphering the inscriptions. He also loved literary skill. He began to spend a lot of time among monks, which led him eventually to devote his life wholeheartedly to Christ. Jerome became a priest, confessor, theologian, historian, and Doctor of the Church. He translated most of the Bible into Latin, wrote extensively about the Gospels, and guided many religious women, as well as advising the Church in times of trouble. He famously said, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ." Jerome was also known for his bad temper and sharp tongue, but believed deeply in the mercy of God. He is the patron saint of librarians. You can read more about him HERE.
Prayer of St. Jerome
O Lord,
you have given us your word
for a light to shine upon our path;
grant us so to meditate on that word,
and follow its teaching,
that we may find in it
the light that shines more and more
until the perfect day.
you have given us your word
for a light to shine upon our path;
grant us so to meditate on that word,
and follow its teaching,
that we may find in it
the light that shines more and more
until the perfect day.
