St. Felix of Nola
On the Grapevine 40
St. Felix of Nola was a devout priest in the third century AD who assisted the Bishop of Nola, St. Maximus. Emperor Decius persecuted Christians, and when the Romans could not find St. Maximus, Felix was dragged in and flogged. Felix escaped prison (with the help of an angel), found and took care of St. Maximus, who was in hiding, starving and very weak. The Roman soldiers went in search of Felix. Fleeing from them, he hid in an old ruined building. As tradition has it, a spider quickly spun a web over the opening to his hiding place. The soldiers searching for him saw the spider's web and assumed that no one had been that way in a long time, and so passed right by St. Felix.
St. Felix was humble, eager to serve the poor and needy, and devoted in love to God. Although he was unanimously chosen to serve as Bishop when Maximus died, Felix declined in favor of a "senior" priest who had 7 days more experience than himself. He is the patron saint of lost animals and Nola, Italy and his feast day is coming up this Wednesday, January 14th. You can read more about him HERE.
